Yesterday Connor and I stepped outside to take something to the compost pile. We were only going to be outside for a few minutes; I left Laila sitting in the living room with her toys.
When I returned Laila was screaming. I didn't see her. I followed her screams and found her crawling up the hall, towards the living room, crying. I think she crawled down the hall to look for us, and was on her way back. She stopped crying when I picked her up.
This morning I left her in the living room with her toys while I went to the bathroom. I heard her hands slap-slap-slapping the floor as she slowly crawled down the hallway. She peered into the bathroom and grinned when she saw me in there. I think she crawled back there looking for me.
I think she is starting to understand that I / people / objects don't disappear when she can't see them. I think this is a developmental milestone. I think my children are incredibly smart. I think all parents probably feel that way.
