Our Resilient Boy

Friday morning I put Connor in Laila's stroller (his request) in front of the t.v. Laila fell asleep, and I thought it would be the perfect time for a nap. What could Connor get into with a broken leg, I thought.

But Connor wouldn't have it.

"Mommy, open your eyes. Open your eyes, Mommy. Mommy, why are your eyes closed? Open them Mommy. Open them."

"Connor, I'm trying to take a nap."

"But the sun is up, Mommy. Open your eyes. Open them. Look at me. Watch me. Watch me Mommy. Watch what I can do. I can buckle myself in."

"That's great, Connor."

"You didn't watch me, Mommy. Open your eyes and watch me. I have to do it again so you can watch me. Watch me, Mommy. I have to unbuckle it first. Watch me unbuckle it."

And on and on and on for more than twenty minutes, until I gave up on the nap.

By Saturday morning Connor was maneuvering very well in the cast. He has developed a little scuttle--he lifts the broken leg into the air and scoots around on his butt using his hands and his good leg. He can even climb the stairs. It's pretty funny to watch.

Early Sunday morning I heard something in our room.

"Is that you, Connor?"

"Yes."

"How did you get out of your bed?" I asked.

"Oh, I just climbed out and came in here." (Scuttle scuttle.) His head popped up on the side of the bed, and he began to climb in. I pulled him up.

"And guess what else, Mommy. I had to go potty, so I just went by myself! I stood up on my good leg and pulled my pants down and went potty! So you didn't have to get out of bed!"

What a sweet boy!

I am absolutely amazed by his resilience. In less than a week he can get around almost as well as he could before he broke his leg. And he hasn't complained about it at all. Other than the initial pain he felt when it happened, and the pain he felt when they set the cast, this really hasn't phased him at all. If it were me I'd be whining and complaining constantly. But not Connor. I almost forget he has a cast. He's so good natured about it.
